NORTH COAST ROADS TO GET ATTENTION

Over $3 million has been announced for the three councils in the Richmond electorate to spend on roads under the first quarter payment of this year's Roads to Recovery programme.

The Nationals Duty Senator for Richmond John Williams said Tweed Shire Council is to receive $1.6 million to spend on seven road improvement projects at Bogangar, Banora Point, Tumbulgum, Numinbah and Nobbys Creek.

Byron Shire Council has been allocated $1.18 million for road improvements at Goonengerry and Ocean Shores, and Ballina Shire is to receive $500,000 for work at Rous Mill.

SMALL BUSINESS GETS A FAIR FIGHT TO STAY ALIVE

Legislation passed by the parliament will give small businesses around Australia more teeth in their fight to stave off larger competitors.

The Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams has been advocating on behalf of the small business sector for years to amend Section 46 of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 to ensure a level playing field.

Senator Williams said under Section 46 it had to be proven that corporations with substantial market power took advantage of its size with the ‘purpose’ of damaging a smaller competitor.

This was highly difficult to prosecute and did not adequately address the question of misuse of market power, a fact noted in the 2014

Wandiyali Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Inc will be able to provide additional case management services in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens with a focus on supporting families impacted by drug and alcohol misuse, thanks to a $330,848 grant from the Coalition Government.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said that Wandiyali Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Inc would receive funding to provide case management services through until 30 June 2019.

“Improving the safety of Indigenous families and communities is one of the highest priorities for the Coalition Government – and this investment will enable Wandiyali to provide additional support to people who need it the most,” Minister Scullion said.
